Disney goes high-tech to measure kids for rides

The sight of kids bursting into tears at Disney theme parks when they suddenly discover they're too short for a particular ride may soon be a thing of the past.

A spokeswoman for Anaheim, California-based Disneyland said on Wednesday the park will soon introduce a fast, high-tech way to measure children to determine which rides they can go on before leading their parents towards any line.

Starting in early 2002, children will be scanned with a high-tech ultrasound device that will instantly measure their height. The device works by bouncing a beam from a paddle placed atop a child's head down to his or her feet, then lights up yellow, blue, green or white to indicate height range and ride eligibility.

Children are then given corresponding colored wristbands indicating which attractions are safe for them to ride.

For example, a green Goofy wristband tells parents their child is at least 46 inches (117 cm) tall and can therefore ride all attractions. A blue Donald Duck wristband would mean they are at least 40 inches (102 cm) tall and eligible for most rides, but not Indiana Jones.

A yellow Minnie Mouse band indicates a child is at least 35 inches (89 cm) tall and eligible for most rides but not Indiana Jones or the so-called ``mountain'' rides including Splash Mountain, Space Mountain and Thunder Mountain, park spokeswoman Chela Castano-Lenahan said.

A white Mickey Mouse wristband means a child is under 35 inches and eligible for kiddie rides and other attractions without height restrictions such as the beloved Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Until now, visitors have had to check their children's heights against markers on posts placed near the entrances to rides where some were turned away after waiting for minutes or hours in long lines.

The device is currently being tested at Disneyland as well as the Disney Quest theme park in Orlando, Florida. Eventually Walt Disney Co. officials expect to install it in all their theme parks, Castano-Lenahan said.
