A Little Girls First Pin Trade
This True Story is why I love this Disney hobby. Today as Michelle and her mom came to Epcot's Pin Central neither knew what was about to happen. Michelle 7 years old came up to Amy & Mike Epcot's Super Pin Traders, her mom told them this was Michelle's first pin trade. Michelle looked first at Mike's vest her eyes wide open looking at each of the 70 pins, but she didn't see anything she wanted. Michelle then turned and started to look at Amy's vest, looking with the intensity of a fine jeweler looking for the perfect diamond. Michelle's eyes stopped and got wide, her little finger pointed to the pin which would be her first trade. As Michelle was putting the new pin on her lanyard, Amy got down close to her and told her she had something very special for her. Amy explained how this pin was a very special pin to make this little girls visit to WDW a Magical Moment. Amy then took a Continuing the Traditions pin out and put it on Michelle's lanyard. Michelle's smile was from ear to ear. I bet Michelle will never forget her first pin trade.

Let's Have a Party! !

Walt Disney World chefs put a creative twist on that old birthday party expectation of "a face full of icing": They unveiled "an icing full of face" Wednesday as the world-famous resort officially lit the candles on a yearlong celebration marking the 100th anniversary of company founder Walt Disney's birth.
One hundred chefs in toques at Disney-MGM Studios theme park assembled 100 individual sheet cakes into a giant frame, forming one 25-foot-by-17-foot birthday cake emblazoned with a portrait of Walt Disney created from colored pastry icing and bordered by 100 candles.

Two Florida children who share Walt Disney's Dec. 5 birthday participated in cutting the cake. Hailey Youtie of Aventura, north of Miami, turned six Wednesday while Nicholas Sturgeon of Orlando was celebrating his ninth birthday.

The ceremony on what would have been Walt Disney's 100th birthday was part of 100 Years of Magic, a celebration that will continue through December 2002 with new entertainment, attractions and events at all four Walt Disney World theme parks.

Wednesday's kickoff also featured:

the official opening of a new "land" at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
the induction of the 2002 "class" of Disney Legends at Disney-MGM Studios. Evening activities were to include:
red-carpet appearances at Disney-MGM Studios by dozens of entertainment celebrities including Julie Andrews, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, Drew Carey, Wayne Brady, Mickey Rooney, Fess Parker, Art Linkletter, and original Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeers Sharon Baird, Bobby Burgess, Lonnie Burr, Tommy Cole, Cheryl Holdridge, Karen Pendelton, Doreen Tracey and Sherry VanMeter.
the dedication of the 100 Years of Magic icon, a 122-foot-tall Mickey's Sorcerer's Hat in the heart of Disney-MGM Studios representing the magic of show business and the entertainment wizardry of Disney.

Walt Disney, the company founder, was born 100 years ago today so it's no wonder Walt Disney World Resort, near Orlando, Fla., is marking the occasion in a very special way. Today's birthday cake features more than 500 pounds of egg whites in the frosting alone! When put together, the cake measures an impressive 25 feet tall and 17 feet wide.

 Mickey's Sorcerer's Hat Icon Dedication
At the dedication of the icon, Roy E. Disney, vice chairman of The Walt Disney Company and chairman of Walt Disney Feature Animation, was among speakers scheduled to give an insight into what the legacy of Walt Disney means to them. He chose the Sorcerer's Apprentice as his topic as an example that represents the two Walt's he knew: Walt the kid being Mickey Mouse and Walt the boss being the Sorcerer.

His prepared remarks concluded, "So it is that this giant hat is such a wonderful symbol of my uncle and my boss. And, it can serve as a reminder of the kid and the sorcerer in all of us."

Made from composite fiberglass and shaped like the pointed hat worn by Mickey in the animated classic "Fantasia," the icon weighs 156 tons. It is a brilliant blue decorated with moon and star shapes in glittering gold. An equally larger-than-life Mickey Mouse hand tips the size 606 7/8 hat, which rests on two shimmering ribbon loops stylized versions of Mickey's ears.

Happy Birthday Walt

Do You Know Walt Disney ?
Did you know that Walt Disney once played the role of Abraham Lincoln? That at the age of 16, he was an Ambulance Corps driver in France? Would you like to hear him talk about what it felt like to create Mickey Mouse -- in recorded words never before heard in public? Treats for the eyes, the ears and the imagination -- memorabilia from the Walt Disney Archives that never before has been available to the public about the career and heritage of Walt Disney and the company he founded -- is showcased in a new attraction at Disney-MGM Studios. "Walt Disney: One Man's Dream" takes 21st-century visitors to Walt Disney World Resort on an emotional journey that starts with Disney's birth in 1901 and ends with the company's vision for the future. The interactive gallery and new film is located on Mickey Avenue at the Disney-MGM Studios. "When we were researching the attraction, we found that many of our guests under the age of 15 did not know Walt Disney was a real person," said Senior Show Producer/Director Roger Holzberg of Walt Disney Imagineering. "They thought it was just a company name. "Throughout the gallery, scenic pieces and props create an experiential trip through each era of Disney's life, beginning with a brief look at Disney's early years, from his birth in Chicago and his formative years in Marceline, Mo., a period that was crucial to his development as an artist and storyteller. Throughout, "connection cards" thread the stories of his creations, from boyhood dreams to reality. And in one of the attraction's most exciting features, Walt Disney himself talks about the most meaningful and emotional moments of his life through a rare collection of audio interviews, many heard publicly for the first time, which are triggered when guests approach the various sections of the gallery. The attraction includes a short film of Walt Disney's life that explores the extraordinary hardships he overcame to achieve what he did in his lifetime. "He is an individual, not an icon," said Holzberg. "This tells the story of Walt the man, and we hope that guests will be moved by the scope of his imagination, what he accomplished, and what he inspired. "It's important to note that 'One Man's Dream' is in no way a retrospective," said Marty Sklar, vice chairman and principal creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering. "Walt always said he had one foot in the past and one in the future. We want to inspire the young creative minds of today to help invent the future. "Spirit of Imagination
The priceless collection of memorabilia for "Walt Disney: One Man's Dream" arrived via FedEx Express from California on an aircraft designated Spirit of Imagination. More than 400 items in all, it took just a few hours for the coast-to-coast FedEx delivery. Artifacts on Display
Rare, historic Disney artifacts on display to help transport guests through the decades of Walt Disney's life include:
Main Street, U.S.A. model for Disneyland
Walt's animation camera stand, the table on which he animated "Steamboat Willie" and "Plane Crazy"
Oscars for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" films
Animated bird from the 1800s that inspired The Enchanted Tiki Room
Disneyland Castle model
An interactive re-creation of Project X (Walt Disney World Resort) Florida conference room
A life-sized Roy Disney graphic with interactive audio as Roy dedicates Walt Disney World Resort in his brother's name
Abraham Lincoln sculpture bust
Disneyland Paris Sleeping Beauty Castle model
Disney's California Adventure model

Tapestry Of Dreams Parade Facts
Concept:
Epcot's magical parade, "Tapestry of Dreams," celebrates children, dreams and the legacy of Walt Disney. The spectacle begins with Dream Seekers dancing alongside the Dream Catcher -- an enormous "float" that interacts with guests. The parade is a "visible dream," in which ideas, images and emotions are evoked through a series of extraordinary puppets and music.
Parade Length:
30 min.
Performed:
Twice nightly
Location:
From Mexico to Morocco in World Showcase
Puppets:
Eight different puppets and 54 designs. Colorful, larger-than-life puppets soar 12 to 19 feet high with wingspans between 8 and 16 feet wide.
Performers:
112 cast members including drivers.
Music:
Original music was composed by Gavin Greenaway and Jonathon Barr, and recorded in London by members of the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic.
Lighting:
Features 412 lighting fixtures throughout the promenade.
Audio System:
The largest networked audio system in the world with 416 speakers throughout the promenade and 137 amplifiers, totaling 164,400 watts of power.
Highlights:
The parade is divided into the Procession and the Celebration.
The Procession blends music with children's voices, each telling their own dream, interspersed with a narrator revealing the power of dreams. There are three Dream Seekers: Elfin (representing nature, magic and emotion) and Cosmo (representing space, the universe and infinity) dance the parade route, interact with guests and "harvest" dreams; Leonardo Columbus (representing discovery, invention and genius) rides the Dream Catcher float, operates its gigantic "wings" and manipulates the float so that chimes and bells ring magically.
The Celebration is a spectacular street festival combining color, music and larger-than-life puppetry that weaves its way through World Showcase. During this joyous celebration, whimsical puppets dance together with guests. Each puppet's specific movements emphasize its distinct character.
The puppets include:
Hammerman -- A futuristic, powerful and mature spiritual warrior that is friendly, with moves similar to a praying mantis.
Discman -- A teenager, class clown, a rag doll who loves people, very interactive, thinks he's a dancer but is uncoordinated.
Reverse Marionette -- A toy-like, fatherly teacher who moves in a tender, gently protective way.
Aztec -- A primitive guardian of the human spirit who moves in a precise, regimented and uplifting manner.
Wiggle Girl -- A flirt, child-like, funny and beautiful, who moves like a dancer in a playful, explosive, interactive and unexpected manner.
Angel -- A spiritual, uplifting, heavenly puppet whose movement is graceful, inspiring, free and interactive.
Sprite -- A fragile, vulnerable, shy character who moves in a graceful ballet-like manner.
Birdman -- A tribal, eagle-like protector whose movement is majestic, statue-like, slow and commanding.
