Fireworks Crews Put Extra For New Year's Eve Shows

Fireworks shows dazzle guests across the Walt Disney World Resort nightly.
On New Year's Eve and Independence Day, Walt Disney Entertainment raises the bar by giving guests extended versions of regular theme park and Pleasure Island fireworks shows.

"We plan these extended sections of the shows, or tags, far ahead," said Cheryl Pecora, manager of Entertainment Operations. "We order the [extra pyro] product seven to eight months in advance."

Walt Disney Entertainment designers plan the tags in cooperation with many departments across property.

Epcot will run a new, extended version of New Year's Eve fireworks following "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" on Dec. 31. Unlike past shows in which perimeter rockets soared from behind World Showcase pavilions, pyro crews will launch rockets directly from the pavilion rooftops.

"The Epcot tag will have a new look and feel," Cheryl said. "Before the countdown, each country that has already celebrated New Year's Eve that day will launch [fireworks] from their roof. We matched the color palates of each pavilion's pyro to the colors of that particular country's flag."

Other fireworks tags on New Year's Eve will include "Fantasy in the Sky" at the Magic Kingdom Park, "Sorcery in the Sky" at the Disney-MGM Studios and the midnight show at Pleasure Island. About 4,815 pieces of pyro will be launched during all four special shows.

"Our team loves the challenge of mounting these shows because they're different from our regular shows, and they take fireworks to another level," Cheryl said. "We love producing them because we know that they create that Disney difference that excites our guests."

Tower of Terror Gets More Terrifying

 
While "sequels" sometimes don't measure up to their originals, the new version of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney-MGM Studios multiplies the thrills inside the 13-story haunted hotel with technology that actually places the attraction in control of each ride experience.

Random ride and drop sequences will be unveiled Dec. 31, making the attraction faster and adding more drops than ever before. In addition, visual, audio and olfactory special effects have been added, making Tower of Terror one of the most advanced multi-sensory attractions anywhere in the world. Ghostly apparitions, rocketing new ascents, more "air time" and cannon blasts of chilling air are just a few of the new surprises in store for brave Walt Disney World guests.

Used racing tires on sale at Richard Petty Driving Experience
 
The Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Walt Disney World Speedway is offering guests a chance to purchase used racing tires and take home their very own piece of NASCAR racing.
The Goodyear Racing Eagle tires, which are used for about 100 laps, are available for $5 each in the showroom store.

"It's something interesting that our guests love to buy, and everyone has their own story," said Brett Smith, crew member at the Richard Petty Driving Experience. "Some folks use them as swings in their yard, tables and even gag gifts. Some hang them in their garage or basement and even take them to races to have autographed by drivers."

According to Brett, a new, full set of Goodyear Racing Eagle tires with rims cost between $500 and $1,200. In some instances, companies have used the tires as corporate-event prizes during workshops and conventions held at the Walt Disney World Speedway.

Guests may visit the Walt Disney World Speedway free of charge to visit with Richard Petty Driving Experience crew members and watch other guests taking part in the various driving and riding programs.

The 2002 Epcot Teddy Bear and Doll Weekend will take place at World ShowPlace at Epcot from Dec. 13-15.
The event will run from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. each day and will feature teddy bear and doll artist appearances, exclusive event logo merchandise and unique holiday photo opportunities with Disney characters.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party
Dec. 1st was the first of the 12- 2002 Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party's. If you have never been before you need to plan on attending. You find a festive Christmas spirit all through Magic kingdom. Snow on Main Street USA, many special Christmas shows, characters in their Christmas best. They also offer free hot cocoa cookies and a complimentary photo.
 The Dec. 1st party also had the 1st of 12 pins being released for this event. This pin is large 1 3/4" across the upper part of the pin and 2 3/4" from top to bottom of dangle.

 The framed set of all 12 pins did not come in  but they were selling the set and will ship it to those who purchased it. This set sells for $195.00 all framed with what I was told is a special lithograph as a background. They do expect them to be available for the 2nd or third party. They will only offer 250 of these framed sets for all 12 party's so go early and get one.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party Pin Releases
One pin will be released per event, at the following locations at the Magic Kingdom:
Emporium, Exposition Hall, Star Traders and Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe
Exposition Hall will also carry the framed pin set, limited to 250 pieces, retailing for $195.00

These four locations will start each event with that evening's pin ONLY. Pins not sold from that evening's event will be transferred to County Bounty for sale at the next scheduled event. These pins will continue to be limited to 2 per guest and will be available only during the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas parties.

It is possible that County Bounty may have multiple pins from these events. Guests may purchase 2 of each pin available, but their credentials will only be marked once. Guests will need to purchase all the previous event pins at one time; they will not be able to purchase additional pins once their credentials have been marked.
